Bourbon or rye?

Bourbon is made from a mash that's mostly corn, which often reads as rounder and sweeter. Rye whiskey leans on rye grain and is often described as spicier and drier. Neither is better; they're different tools. Rye shows up in many classic stirred cocktails, while plenty of bourbon fans sip it neat. Our bourbon vs rye guide goes deeper.

Read the proof

Proof is twice the alcohol by volume, so 100 proof is 50% ABV. Higher proof usually means a bolder, more concentrated pour; many people add a splash of water. If you're comparing two bottles, check the proof first. It explains a lot of the difference in the glass.

Single barrel vs small batch

"Single barrel" means the bottle came from one barrel, so flavor can vary from one release to the next. "Small batch" means a blend of a limited number of barrels, though the term has no fixed size. Neither guarantees quality; they describe how the whiskey was put together. The Blanton's story is a good example of single barrel bottling.

Write down the exact expression

Many brands make several versions: different ages, proofs and finishes. Note the full name on the label, or keep a photo, so you ask about the right bottle.

When a bottle is hard to find

Some bottles are released in small amounts and come and go quickly. Call (601) 353-0331 before your trip to check, and ask what's similar if your first choice isn't available. Read looking for rare bourbon in Jackson for more.
