The Story of Blanton's Bourbon: What Makes a Single Barrel Different?

Few bourbon bottles are as easy to recognize on a shelf as Blanton's, with its round bottle and the small horse-and-jockey stopper on top. Behind the memorable packaging is an idea that changed how many people shop for bourbon: the single barrel.
A brief history
According to the brand, Blanton's was introduced in 1984 by master distiller Elmer T. Lee. He named it in honor of Colonel Albert B. Blanton, who liked to set aside individual barrels from a storage building known as Warehouse H for special occasions and guests. Lee turned that personal custom into a product meant to be bottled from one barrel at a time.
What "single barrel" means
Most bourbon is a blend of many barrels, mixed together so each bottle tastes consistent from one year to the next. A single barrel bourbon is instead bottled from one individual barrel. Labels on single barrel products often note the barrel number, a bottling date or other identifying details.
Why two barrels can differ
Even barrels filled from the same batch and stored in the same warehouse can age differently. Position in the warehouse, temperature swings and the wood itself all play a part. As a result, two single barrel bottles of the same brand may show small differences in aroma, flavor or intensity. For many fans that variation is part of the appeal. It is also a good reason not to expect any single bottle to match a review word for word.
Identify the exact expression
The Blanton's name appears on more than one product, and availability of individual expressions varies by market. When you ask about a bottle, be specific:
- The full name exactly as printed on the label.
- The proof shown on the label.
- The bottle size.
- A photo of the label, if you have one.
Our guide to reading bourbon labels explains the terms you are likely to see.
Questions worth asking before you buy
- Is this the exact expression and size I am looking for?
- Does the label and seal look intact and in good condition?
- Does the price fit the budget I set before shopping?
- If it is not available, what similar style might I enjoy?
